A letter to staff
It’s equally important to me that we provide you with the support that you need to do your work. This could relate to training, our health and wellbeing programme, help and advice if you yourself are experiencing problems at work or you feel that there is an issue that needs to be raised with us about our organisation. Over the years we’ve worked hard to create a culture of understanding and openness, where colleagues and patients are valued and respected, regardless of their background or differences. This was key to our Values and Behaviours, which we revised last year using feedback from our patients and listening to our staff.
Last year we also looked carefully at our existing procedures, to ensure that we have the right systems and support in place for you to report genuine concerns and re-launched and publicised our Raising Concerns (whistleblowing) Policy. It’s good to see that in the survey, our staff would feel secure about raising concerns regarding unsafe clinical practice. While nationally and locally, the survey has found low levels of discrimination at work, staff perceptions of bullying and harassment have increased, as we heighten awareness of this issue and pursue an ongoing “zero tolerance” in this area. We will, therefore, continue to encourage the reporting of incidents, promote positive attitudes within our organisation and, where we need to make changes and improvements, do so through our action plan.
As I mentioned earlier our staff have, overall, given a positive view of the hospital. There are a number of other indicators such as communication and engagement, team working, job satisfaction, support from immediate managers and the ability for staff to contribute to improvements, where our staff have placed us among the best Trusts in the country. I not only see our staff survey as another opportunity to value what is good about working in Salisbury, but also use it to continually listen and learn from our staff. Where you say we are doing well we must celebrate - where you feel we can do better, we will make changes. The staff survey is an invaluable way of gauging your views so thanks to those of you who took time to complete the survey last autumn. Your feedback is invaluable and we cannot continually make improvements without your support.
