Cranborne Chase AONB StarFest 2023
We are using the Coombe Bissett Village Hall and adjacent sports field for this year’s Cranborne Chase AONB StarFest event on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th February.
We would love to encourage local people to get involved and sign up to events (all free). At the end of the information is a link for people to book onto the various activities.
StarFest 2023 – 10th and 11th February
Join Cranborne Chase AONB’s Chase & Chalke team next month for StarFest 2023, a series of free events and activities to help you discover and understand the amazing dark night skies of the Cranborne Chase AONB International Dark Sky Reserve. The free stargazing activities, include:
Friday 10th February
6.30pm – Storytelling and Stargazing
Enjoy star stories around the firepit with storyteller Lizzie Bryant, followed by stargazing with astronomers. Free, but booking essential.
Saturday 11th February
10am to 5pm - Planetarium
Visit our pop-up planetarium in the village hall for sky tours and to learn about some of the myths and legends which give us the names of constellations and join in with a range of creative dark night sky activities, suitable for all ages. No booking necessary, sessions will be repeated every 40 minutes.
If the sky is clear we will also be doing solar observing in the field adjacent to the village hall.
10.30am and 2.30pm – Astronomy Art Workshops with Mary McIntyre
Create your own beautiful pastel sketch of a lunar crater or deep sky object under the guidance of astronomy artist Mary McIntyre. Suitable for all ages and abilities, all materials are provided. Free, but booking essential.
1pm to 2pm – Talk: Why Dark Skies Are Important, with AONB Dark Sky Advisor Steve Tonkin
Learn about the negative effects of Artificial Light at Night on both human health and wildlife and find out what you can do to help without compromising your security or ability to safely work, travel and play! Free talk, but booking essential.
6.30pm – Storytelling and Stargazing
Enjoy star stories around the firepit with storyteller Lizzie Bryant, followed by stargazing with astronomers. Free, but booking essential.
